Round 1: Walton Heath NEW Course - 13th May

The 104 year old New Course at Walton Heath was venue to the first event of the year.

22 players competed over this wonderful heathland course and continuing our good fortune from last year, we were once again lucky enough to be bathed in bright sunshine. The scoring was high, the hospitality warm and the catering superb and in a closely fought competition Ron Winchester rolled back the years and won the day with an exceptional 39 points. Ron beat Chris Palmer by a solitary point and was also in the winning team alongside Derek Lodge, Nik Askaroff and Eric Sturgeon. The best score of the day however belonged to Adrian Turton who competed in the guest competition scored a tremendous 40 points.

This was the first time the society has been back to Walton Heath in over a decade but I am sure we will be returning in the not too distant future.

Wentworth

Round 2: Wentworth - Tuesday 7th June

The Wentworth Club was the second stopping off point of the year for the society and a field of 24 players lined up to take on the challenge of the iconic West Course. It had been a little over two weeks since the BMW PGA Championships were held there and the course was in fantastic condition.

As you would expect for a championship course, scoring was difficult and birdies were hard to come by (as if they are ever easy!) but that not withstanding we saw some tremendous golf played. The winner of the members' category was Chris Palmer who scored 33 points. Chris is obviously in a rich vein of form as he came second at Walton Heath back in May. Second place went to John Myers with a creditable 30 points. However, I'm sure Chris and John won't mind us saying, the star of the day was undoubtedly Mick Browning, a regular guest at the Jack Barclay days who not only scored a best of the day 36 points, but I believe the first HOLE IN ONE in the society's history! A sweet six iron at the 5th hole that nestled in the bottom of the cup to give Mick his fourth ever hole in one. Congratulations to Mick for that tremendous feat.

Everything about Wentworth was first class, the food, the course, the service and I'm sure we'll be coming back next year.

Swinley Forest

Round 4: Swinley Forest - Friday 2nd September

A small but select group of members enjoyed a fabulous day at Swinley Forest, one of the country's most exclusive clubs.

Cut out of the forest with the heather in full bloom, looking magnificent in the early autumn sunshine, Swinley was at its picturesque best and in great condition.

Regular member Chris Palmer, won with a commendable 35 points while, not for the first time, guests out gunned the members with Ian Smith, guest of Mike Browning, winning the guest prize with 38 points helping his team of Mike and Brian Cognet to the team honours with a very healthy 82 points.

The day concluded with the legendary Swinley lunch, famous for its breaded fish starter, superb carvery and sweet and cheese trolley to die for.

It was a great way to bring the season to a close having already visited Walton Heath, Wentworth and Stoke Park.

All in all a good year for the Society.
