Round 1: St. Georges Hill 6th May

As I am sure you are all aware of by now we have a new trophy in existence that has been displayed at every golf day throughout the year and resides in the famous Jack Barclay boardroom in Berkeley Square. This has been engraved with every winner from all the society meetings since 1997 and we are delighted to have three new names to put on the dish this year. So congratulations to Peter Browning, Brian Cognet and John Myers who have joined the roll of honour in 2009!
St George’s Hill once again hosted the first society event of the year. A favourite venue of the society, St George’s has been a mainstay of the calendar over the last five or six years and it’s not hard to see why. The weather was kind; the course was in superb condition and as ever the catering delightful.
24 players took part and for the second year in succession Peter Browning took the honours. A course that obviously suits Peter’s game, he went round in a gross 70 which gave him a tremendous 41 points.
Derek Lodge was runner up with 38 points and the Best Guest prize went to Derek’s son Oliver Lodge who also scored 38 points. With this impressive consistency it was the father and son duo that also carried away the afternoon Greensomes Pairs prize with 23 points.

Round 2: Stoke Park 11th June - Bentley Golf Classic Qualifier

Although it looked a little uncertain to start with, glorious sunshine was also the order of the day for the second society event which was held at the beautiful Stoke Park. This event also served as our qualifier into the National Bentley Golf Classic Tournament.
A field of 28 lined up hoping to be the one that qualified through to represent Jack Barclay at the UK Final, which this year takes place at Archerfield Links, Nr Edinburgh.
Even though conditions were very good if a little windy, scoring proved to be much harder than at St George’s Hill and there was a tie for first place on 34 points. The result was eventually decided on countback with Brian Cognet proving victorious, scoring, as he did, 20 points on the back 9. We congratulate Brian and look forward to seeing him in September at Archerfield. Michael Nicholson was the unfortunate runner-up but will be first reserve should Brian not be able to make it. Stephen Legg won the Best Guest prize with 33 points.

Round 3: The Berkshire - 23rd July 2009
Our golfing year concluded with a return to The Berkshire after a five year absence. Always in wonderful condition, the venue proved very popular and despite a couple of heavy showers (that took us all by surprise) it is a course that I’m sure will be on our rota for a quite a while. John Myers, who incidentally drove down from Newcastle especially to play, was rewarded for his commitment by winning his fist society event with 37 points. Trevor Cock was second with 36 and Chris Milner-Moore won the guest prize with 32 points. Trevor and Chris, together with Derek Lodge and Nik Askarof were victorious in the team competition.

Bentley Golf Classic National Final - Archerfield Links 25th September
The culmination of the Bentley Golf Classic was this year held at Archerfield Links, situated on the East Lothian coastline in Scotland.
With competitors and their partners staying at the Grade I listed Archerfield House, this two day final was a huge success with golfers and partners alike. The rain thankfully stayed away but strong winds were the order of the day which made playing conditions extremely testing. Brian Cognet represented Jack Barclay manfully but unfortunately his 31 points was seven shy of the winning total of 38 scored by Bentley Birmingham’s Kevin Rose. Brian however didn’t leave empty handed as he was part of the winning team in the afternoon Texas Scramble.
The venue for 2010 is still to be decided but we look forward to competing once again and trying to go one better and bring the trophy back to Berkeley Square.
