18 Holes: Colt Allison course

Stoke Park

With a recorded history of more than 900 years, this 350 acre parkland estate provides a unique blend of traditional members’ club and the very best of today’s sporting, leisure, entertaining and accommodation facilities in one of the most convenient locations in Britain.

A private residence until 1908, the estate was purchased by Nick “Pa” Lane Jackson with the sole aim of creating Britain’s greatest country club. Almost one hundred years on, Stoke park, situated only seven miles from Heathrow Airport and 35 minutes from central London offers a 27 Hole Championship Golf Course and world-class spa and tennis facilities.

The Course: The golf course, known as Stoke Poges, was designed by the legendary Harry Shapland Colt, opening in July 1909 to immediate acclaim: “If there were no palatial clubhouse and no beautiful gardens and grounds, the course itself would take a great deal of beating anywhere. Colt, to whom belongs the credit of designing it, has scored a great success and his reputation as a green architect, already high, will be greatly enhanced by this the latest of his works.” (Golf Illustrated, 1909).

Stoke Park’s 100 years of history make it more than just a great course. The epic duel between James Bond (Sean Connery) and the eponymous Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) shot at Stoke Park and first screened in 1964 is still considered to be the most famous game of golf in cinematic history. The Stoke Park round of the 2009 season will be the qualification event for the 2009 Bentley Golf Classic, Bentley Motors’ national Golf championship.
